Star Wars (1977)
The First Star Wars Poster Ever Released in Britain (1977) and one of the rarest and most important Star Wars posters ever produced.
This is the exceptionally rare Hildebrandt Brothers version of the Star Wars British Quad, used for only a brief period in selected West End London cinemas when the film was first released in 1977, before being replaced by the more familiar Tom Chantrell artwork.
This poster represents the very first Star Wars quad issued in the United Kingdom. Following the film’s release, it was decided that the characters should more closely resemble the actors appearing in the movie, resulting in the withdrawal of the Hildebrandt design and its replacement with Chantrell’s now-famous artwork.
As documented in The Star Wars Poster Book, the Hildebrandt Brothers were given just 48 hours to complete the artwork. Working around the clock in alternating shifts, they produced what has become one of the most celebrated images in Star Wars poster history. The poster debuted in London during the initial release in late 1977 and was replaced on New Year’s Eve by the Chantrell design.
One of the crown jewels of Star Wars poster collecting.
