Houseboat (1958)
This original US One Sheet issued for the 1958 theatrical release of Melville Shavelson’s romantic comedy, Houseboat. A sultry, low-lit portrait of Cary Grant and Sophia Loren dominates the top register, while the lower section bursts with Technicolor charm, featuring a beautifully painted illustration of an exasperated Grant wrangling three children as a radiant Loren laughs joyously nearby.
The bright domestic comedy depicted in the artwork sharply contrasts with one of Hollywood's most famously tense productions. The film's original script was actually penned by Grant's then-wife, Betsy Drake, as a starring vehicle for the married couple. However, after falling deeply in love with Loren during the filming of The Pride and the Passion, Grant notoriously manoeuvred to have Loren take Drake's role. The on-set dynamic became painfully complicated when Loren ultimately rejected Grant's ongoing marriage proposals, opting instead to marry producer Carlo Ponti by proxy in the middle of the shoot, forcing a heartbroken Grant to act out a fictional, happy-ending romance with the woman who had just left him.
