Operation Petticoat (1959)
This original US Insert poster was issued for the 1959 theatrical release of Blake Edwards’ smash-hit World War II comedy, Operation Petticoat. Featuring Cary Grant holding a telltale pink undergarment while Tony Curtis admiringly watches a pair of legs descend a submarine ladder, this playful design is topped with a whimsical caricature of the titular vessel and the brilliant tagline, "20,000 Laughs Under the Sea!"
For Tony Curtis, sharing top billing in this picture was the realisation of a lifelong dream. Curtis famously idolised Grant, having just spent a significant portion of his previous blockbuster, Some Like It Hot, performing a spot-on, exaggerated impression of the legendary actor. Grant actually championed Curtis for the role of the hustling Lieutenant Holden, leading to a massively successful production that enjoyed unprecedented cooperation from the U.S. Navy, who went so far as to allow the filmmakers to paint a genuine, combat-veteran World War II submarine (the USS Balao) completely pink for the exterior shots.
