Raiders Of The Lost Ark (1981)
Artwork by Richard Amsel. Released on June 12, 1981, Raiders of the Lost Ark became the year's top-grossing film and remains one of the highest-grossing films ever made. It was nominated for nine Academy Awards in 1982, including Best Picture, and won four (Best Art Direction, Best Film Editing, Best Sound, Best Visual Effects). In 1999, the film was included in the U.S. Library of Congress' National Film Registry as having been deemed "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant”. And more than a quarter century later, "Raiders" is still one of the greatest action movies ever created, with Steven Spielberg and Harrison Ford at the top of their game.
Richard Amsel (1947–1985) was one of the most gifted poster artists of his generation, whose work helped define the visual culture of 1970s and 1980s cinema. Known for his painterly style, bold colours, and striking portraiture, Amsel created some of the most enduring poster images of all time, including The Sting (1973), Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), Flash Gordon (1980), and Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome (1985). His illustrations conveyed both glamour and drama, elevating movie advertising into fine art. Beyond film, Amsel produced over 40 covers for TV Guide, cementing his reputation as one of the leading illustrators of American popular culture. Though his life was tragically cut short at 37, his legacy endures, and his posters remain highly prized by collectors worldwide.
