The Goonies (1985)
An original 1985 British Quad for The Goonies, unfolded.
"Goonies never say die!" Steven Spielberg dreamed up the story, Chris Columbus wrote it and Richard Donner directed this ultimate kids' treasure hunt: a gang of misfits from Astoria, Oregon, a pirate map, booby-trapped caves, One-Eyed Willy's lost ship and, of course, Sloth. It's packed with stories to share. Donner kept the full-size pirate ship hidden from the young cast until the cameras rolled, so their gasps on screen are completely real. It was Josh Brolin's first film, and Ke Huy Quan, who played gadget-mad Data, went on to win an Oscar nearly forty years later for Everything Everywhere All at Once.
Drew Struzan's painted artwork is pure 1980s adventure: Brand clinging to the cave roof with the whole gang dangling beneath him in a human chain, above the treasure map, beside that wonderful list of promises ending "And Sloth... Join the adventure." Quads were sent out folded to British cinemas, so a copy like this that has never been folded is very rare indeed. A tangible piece of everyone's childhood, and a guaranteed conversation starter on any wall.
