The Party (1968)

Lobby Card (8 X 10 Inches)
£135.00

Original United Artists US Mini Lobby Card #6.

The film is widely recognised as a "radical experiment" in Hollywood storytelling that prioritised visual gags over a traditional script. This approach allowed for a high degree of improvisation between director Blake Edwards and star Peter Sellers, which was made possible by their pioneering use of "video assist" technology. By allowing the team to review and refine their physical comedy immediately on a monitor, this innovation established a new standard for precision in comedic filmmaking that remains an industry staple today.

In this scene, the party's sophisticated atmosphere has completely disintegrated as a baby elephant, adorned with colourful "hippie" slogans is led through the crowd. This moment sets the stage for the film's famous climax; when the well-meaning Hrundi V. Bakshi (Peter Sellers) decides the painted elephant needs a bath, he inadvertently triggers a massive soap overflow that fills the entire mansion with foam.
