Godfather, The (1972)
An original 1972 US Teaser One Sheet, folded as issued.
Before it was a film, The Godfather was a publishing sensation. Mario Puzo's 1969 novel spent months on the bestseller lists and sold millions of copies, so when Paramount came to sell the movie, it barely needed to explain it.
This teaser is the proof: just the book's famous logo and the words "The Godfather is now a movie." Teasers went up in cinemas months ahead of release to build anticipation, and were replaced and discarded as soon as the main campaign arrived, so far fewer survive than regular posters.
It's one of the boldest pieces of film advertising of the decade, trusting audiences to know exactly what that meant, and a fascinating snapshot of the moment just before the film became a legend. A brilliant piece for the collector who wants something different.
