Saint Joan (1957)

Saint Joan feels unusually modern for a 1950s historical drama. Adapted from George Bernard Shaw, it frames Joan not as an untouchable saint but as a sharp, inconvenient presence who unsettles institutions and authority. That perspective resonated in the postwar era and still does now, less about faith, more about power, conviction, and what happens when one person refuses to fall in line.

Designed by Saul Bass. The abstract figure, broken shapes, and limited palette feel closer to modern art than traditional movie advertising. It doesn’t explain the story, it suggests it, trusting the design to do the heavy lifting. A classic example of Bass using minimalism to make something unforgettable.
