The Lady from Shanghai was the film in which Orson Welles cut off Rita Hayworth’s famous red hair and dyed it platinum blonde, to the fury of Columbia boss Harry Cohn. The couple were already separating when they made it, and the studio was so baffled by the result that it sat on the film for well over a year. Its shattering hall of mirrors finale has been borrowed by filmmakers ever since.
An original 1947 US One Sheet, linen-backed. Hayworth was Columbia’s greatest asset, and this campaign sold a new, cooler version of her to an audience who knew her best from Gilda.
