Les Quatre Cents Coups (1959), translated as The 400 Blows, is a landmark of world cinema that launched the French New Wave movement. Directed by François Truffaut in his feature debut, the film is deeply semi-autobiographical, reflecting the director's own troubled upbringing in Paris. It introduced the world to Antoine Doinel (Jean-Pierre Léaud), a misunderstood adolescent who "raises hell", a translation of the film's title idiom, to escape his unloving parents and repressive school system. The film's critical and commercial success, including winning Best Director at the 1959 Cannes Film Festival, proved that personal, low-budget "auteur" filmmaking could captivate a global audience.
