Blood Simple (1985)
Blood Simple wasthe debut feature of the Coen Brothers, introducing a sharp, ironic reinvention of classic film noir for the 1980s. Its stylised violence, moral ambiguity, and dark humour signalled a new auteur voice in American independent cinema and helped launch the careers of key collaborators, including Frances McDormand.
This poster emphasises noir tension through a tightly cropped still-life of a gun, a dropped purse, and intertwined feet, framed by glowing neon rectangles that evoke nightclub light and fatal entrapment. Often credited to designer Adam Maida, the minimalist composition and lurid colour contrast suggest desire, violence, and inevitability, aligning the film with classic noir imagery while firmly situating it in a modern, 1980s visual language.
