La Dolce Vita (1960)
Simple, sultry and instantly eye-catching, this American design puts Anita Ekberg front and centre: a close-up of the Swedish bombshell cuddling a little white kitten. Fans will know exactly where that kitten comes from. In the film's most famous sequence, Ekberg wanders the streets of Rome at night with a stray kitten perched on her head, before wading into the Trevi Fountain and calling "Marcello, come here!" It's one of the most iconic moments in cinema history.
La Dolce Vita follows Marcello (Marcello Mastroianni), a gossip journalist drifting through Rome's glittering nightlife of parties, film stars and casual affairs, while wondering if there's more to life. It won the Palme d'Or at Cannes in 1960, picked up an Oscar for its costumes, made Fellini the most famous director in Europe, and even gave us the word "paparazzi", after Marcello's photographer sidekick, Paparazzo. When it reached America, it was sold as a scandal: the posters promised "the sin and the sinners" and "the most shocked about film of our years", and audiences queued round the block.
Posters like this were sent out to American cinemas for the film's release and then thrown away once it moved on. They were never meant to survive, and US paper for La Dolce Vita, especially with Ekberg at her most glamorous, is a wonderful find for any lover of Italian cinema.
