Taxi Driver (1976)
A superb original Polish poster featuring Andrzej Klimowski’s extraordinary artwork, created for the film’s first Polish release in 1978. Klimowski transforms Robert De Niro’s Travis Bickle into a bold, almost Pop Art image, using halftone printing, fragmented typography and strong blocks of colour to capture the character’s isolation and troubled state of mind. It is widely regarded as one of the most desirable international poster designs for Taxi Driver.
Martin Scorsese’s Taxi Driver became a landmark of 1970s American cinema, winning the Palme d’Or at Cannes and earning four Academy Award nominations. Klimowski’s radically different interpretation also represents the celebrated tradition of Polish poster art, where artists were given remarkable freedom to reinterpret films rather than simply reproduce conventional studio advertising. Lightly folded and in excellent condition, this first-release 1978 Polish poster is an exceptional combination of cinema history and graphic design.
