A key book publicity still is a photographic image taken during the production of a film, primarily for publicity and marketing purposes. These stills were kept in what was known as the "key book"—a studio reference archive that contained all the approved photographs related to a film's promotion. The "key book" was a master file or binder kept by the studio’s publicity department. It held the best photos chosen for promoting the film: for use in newspapers, magazines, press kits, lobby cards, and other marketing. Publicists, press agents, and exhibitors would browse the key book to select images for their materials.
