Ponyo (2020R)
An original 2020 Chinese One Sheet (Style B) for Hayao Miyazaki's Ponyo, unfolded.
Ponyo is Miyazaki at his most joyful. Five-year-old Sosuke finds a little goldfish with a girl's face trapped in a jar on the shore, and names her Ponyo. She falls for him, tastes ham for the first time, and decides she wants to be human, unleashing a magical storm that sends her racing across the tops of the waves to find him. It's a fairy tale inspired by The Little Mermaid, told with all of Studio Ghibli's warmth and wonder.
It's also a love letter to hand-drawn animation. Miyazaki insisted on drawing the sea and its waves by hand, and the film used over 170,000 hand-drawn frames, more than any of his films before it. Its catchy theme song became a huge hit in Japan, and Ponyo has been a family favourite around the world ever since its 2008 release.
Remarkably, Ponyo didn't reach Chinese cinemas until the end of 2020, twelve years after its premiere. This poster was printed for that first Chinese release, when audiences there finally saw her on the big screen. Chinese cinema posters for Ghibli films are produced in small numbers and are increasingly sought after by fans and collectors outside China, making this a charming and unusual piece for any Miyazaki collection.
