Roman Holiday helped redefine the romantic comedy by keeping things light, grounded, and bittersweet. It made Audrey Hepburn a star overnight and showed that love stories didn’t need fairytale endings to feel real or satisfying.
This still shows Audrey Hepburn as Princess Ann standing beside Gregory Peck as Joe Bradley in a government office, mid charade. Joe is trying to pass her off as an ordinary citizen while officials look on, slightly confused. It’s one of those moments where the movie’s comedy and tension overlap, Ann is clearly out of place, but that’s exactly what makes the scene work.
